Recessions pangs - 6000 Small BPOs may have been shutdown in India

All of us are hit in some or the other way due to the ongoing economic slowdown and the outsourcing industry is no exception to that fact.
It is feared that due to this slowdown, around 6000 small and medium sized BPOs (50-100 seater range) have either already shut down their business or they are on the verge of shutting it down. There are in fact very small number of these BPOs, which are trying to sustain through these difficult times. Most of these BPOs had their hands full in 2008 and they were able to choose which project to work and which one to reject (profit margins being the strongest driver of such decisions).
Come 2009, most of these BPOs haven't been able to sign up any new customers nor have they received any new orders from their existing customers. So these BPOs, in a bid for survival, are looking internally within India - domestic market - to search for work and they are literally willing to do any work at any cost.
On a side note, Phillipines is emerging as a strong competition to the Indian BPO industry. Phillipines iffers comparatively cheaper labour, better infrastructure, lesser red-tapeism. She also has a good number of English speaking people. The big names of Indian BPO industry like Genpact, Aegis BPO and others already have foot-prints in Phillipines and they have ambitious plans to grow in that market. It is said that the Phillipines market is growing at double the rate that of India's Outsourcing Market growth.
